Downtown, Washington, DC
If you need to occupy your gang outside this summer, Banneker Recreation Center is the perfect place to while away a day. Located at 2500 Georgia Avenue adjacent to Howard University, this DC space offers a fabulous playground with tons of climbing equipment, a small skate plaza perfect for a child learning the ropes, and a large DC public pool, which can be very crowded on the weekend. The pool is closed on Thursdays. There are also tennis courts and basketball courts. On Saturday mornings in the summer, there is a free tennis club! There is street parking and some parking in an off-street parking lot to the inside of the tennis courts. The nearest metro is the Shaw-Howard University stop on the Green line. If you get hungry, there is a McDonald’s a block away and many restaurant choices on U Street. There may be a bathroom in the community center, but I can’t say for certain.
